Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q.)

Here are some frequently asked questions regarding online learning.
What is online learning?

Also referred to as distance education; courses offered online that do not require the student to be on campus for most or all class participation. Students can work with course materials at their own convenience or they can work collaboratively on class projects using tools like chat and discussion groups (bulletin boards). Online learning is also called "e-learning."
How does online learning work?

Course materials may include Web resources, multimedia software, videotaped lectures and seminars, and audiotaped lectures. Class discussions with classmates and one-on-one interactions with faculty occur online via e-mail conferences and chat rooms as well as through teleconferences. These interactive online courses are taught by the same world-renowned faculty who are on campus and receive the same college credit as the comparable on-campus courses.
Is online learning different from distance learning?

Online and distance learning is basically the same. They are types of learning, that takes place with the instructor and student geographically remote from each other. Distance typically occurs via the Internet via Internet technologies such as e-mail, message boards, chat rooms, and desktop video or computer conferencing. It can also be accomplished via video, interactive or cable TV, or satellite broadcast.
Can I take the class from any computer? From any location?

Absolutely, as long as the computer meets the system requirements for the class. You may also work from any location with Internet access. All you will need is the assigned password and username to access the class.
Will I learn as much in an online course as I would in a traditional, face to face class?

According to CCA consulting, nearly 50% of higher education institutions currently engage in some type of online learning. Academic and professional organizations agree that using web-based learning environments can offer sound pedagogical benefits. According to researchers from Cornell University, "the web provides significant new functionality in transmitting information to the student and providing forums for exchange. The web is revolutionizing some areas of study through increased opportunities for learning and alternative formats for information."
What are the benefits of online learning?

Benefits include flexibility by using web-based communication tools. Web-based education tools provide many ways to increase communication between class members and faculty, including discussion boards, chats, and e-mails. Researchers have found that adding these elements to a course increases student motivation and participation in class discussions and projects. Students are "more willing to participate [due to] a measure of anonymity, which serves as a motivator, people feel more empowered."
What is Accreditation and is it important?

The US Department of Education approves accrediting agencies. These accrediting agencies review a school's educational program for quality, and certify that the school meets a minimal set of standards. So it is important to be sure that the schools to which you are applying are accredited by a recognized accrediting agency, since schools without accreditation are likely to be of lesser quality.
